Portenta Machine Control
The system is powered by an Arduino Machine Control unit, programed through the Arduino IDE. It interfaces with temperature sensors, motor controls, and a touch screen which outputs relevant metrics for system operation. The PLC monitors temperatures throughout the system as well as motor speed, process time, and a history of previous runs.
The design consists of three main components: The hopper, reaction chamber, and char separator. Each piece was a custom design fabricated through a local sheet metal manufacturer.
Reaction Chamber
Hopper
To kickstart the reaction we're utilizing propane. Temperature is controlled by the PLC through a gas low voltage gas valve with a secondary thermopile controlled solenoid to prevent gas leaks.
